A WARM WELCOME AWAITS YOU AT CAPEL-LE -FERNE EVENING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

Monthly Report

The annual meeting was held in November and took the opportunity to reflect on the busy and successful year. Retiring committee members were thanked for their contribution and a new committee, with Coleta Spillett as President, was elected. The financial report indicated that the group remains viable, with no deficit – an achievement in itself in these times of recession.

Attention turn turned to successes for the year. Three key events have been hosted – a 50th birthday party, a visit from the twin Institute 5 Oak Green and more recently the group meeting for local WIs. At two of these our active drama group performed items specially written for the occasion.

Coordinated by the craft group the WI entered the ‘Let’s Celebrate’ exhibition, where two members’ items gained maximum points; the darts team were runners up in the darts tournament. A new book share venture had proved successful, not only in terms of pleasure for readers, but also raising money for charity.
More funds had been raised for charity throughout the year, including Demelza House, who benefited from donations during carolling singing at the Tuesday Farmers’ Market; they will be singing again at the on 22 December.

At most monthly meeting speakers are invited to talk to us. This year there has been a wide range – Old Days and Past Ways on Romney Marsh (the sewage cart was euphemistically called the Lavender Cart) and the origins and work of Coastwatch represented local history. From further afield we heard of the life and time of a florist and of a heart warming pilgrimage to Italy.

If your image of us is Jam and Jerusalem, then visit us for up to three meetings next year and find out the truth. There is a continual round of activities to entertain members, including scrabble, darts, drama, book share, craft and home economics, as well as outings. We’re very lucky in Capel that our WI is a strong and supportive social network where new members are always welcome. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month in the Village Hall; you can ring 01303211 480 and we’ll arrange someone to host your evening, or you can just turn up and be welcomed.

As well as the formal annual reports this month we celebrated the 90th birthday of Doris Breaden. Singing of Jerusalem was immediately followed by a round of happy birthday and the usual refreshments were supplemented by a homemade cake (fruit not jam) and wine.
