Warden's Rambles - August 2010

Posted by Peter Jones on Aug 02, 2010

Events

I have attended some brilliant events in Capel over the past few weeks. The Plots and Pilots garden safari, Capel School fete and Battle of Britain Memorial day were events that show Capel at its finest and all events were blessed with fantastic weather. Further afield the Alkham and Hougham fetes were equally successful which shows the strength of community in our village cluster. A huge well done goes to all of the organisers and volunteers at these events, the amount of work that goes into making them happen is tremendous and you should all be very proud of your efforts.

Crime

Various incidents have been dealt with this month including:-

Damage to phone boxes along the B2011;

Damage to cars and tyres let down on 11th July;

Theft of lead flashing;

1 x Domestic burglary;

Incidents of indecent exposure.

Scams

Villagers have been targeted with a number of scams this month firstly ‘PC online care’ have been contacting people by phone saying they can speed up your Microsoft system. Do not follow their directions to press buttons on your computer or give them any card or bank details or you will end up losing your settings, data and money.

Similar scams are from a caller purporting to be representing EDF saying they can save you 40% on your bill and one from a company claiming your bank has to pay back any money it has charged you over the years and the figure waiting for you is xxx (for example £900) in all cases they are after your bank, card and/or personal details. Don’t fall for it.

Trading standards have been targeting waste carriers collecting door to door please let Gretel or me know if you have problems with these vehicles (registration numbers if you can get them please).

Lost and Found

I have been informed of a Nokia phone and an Ipod lost in two separate incidents in the village. Also a set of keys have been found in the area of the village hall glass recycling. Please contact me if you have found or lost these items.

Any comments concerning the village can be raised on the numbers below.

Warden's Rambles - June 2010

Scams

Scam activities throughout the area include fake RNLI collection bags, Bogus workmen highlighting repairs they have noticed need doing on your property and will discount the cost as they are “only working round the corner” and.unlicensed waste carrier vans collecting scrap.

The phone calls where a caller with a foreign accent purports to have found a fault with your computer is a scam bid to access your details, just tell them you know it’s a scam and hang up.

Trading Standards are also urging people to be wary of mailing gold to companies to be valued (safer to physically take it to a local jewellers) also be extra careful when buying event tickets online as there are many fake suppliers at the moment.

If in any doubt about any transaction please err on the side of caution.

Security Advice

PCSO Stevens and I held a marking and security advice day in May in each of the residential parks. If any other residents would like general security advice or security marking please call either of us on the numbers below.

Parking

I know I have highlighted complaints about parking around the village before but it seems there are a minority that insist on parking without regard for anyone else. There should be no need to park on the footpath or on junctions and it could mean your vehicle gets a ticket or towed away!

Football

The Communities Challenge Cup football tournament organised jointly by Kent Police and Kent Community Wardens will be taking place on Thursday 19th August 2010. The age group for this tournament is 12-14 inclusive.

Capel have held the cup since 2008 but as some of our players have now crossed the upper age limit we are on the lookout for new talent, .if you would like to be considered for the team please call me on the number below.

Charity Cycle Ride

I will be cycling the 56 miles from London to Brighton on the 20th June 2010 in aid of the British Heart Foundation. If anyone would like to support this worthy cause you can do it online at http//original.justgiving.com/paul.james7 or I will be around at the farmers market on Tuesday mornings.

Warden's Rambles - April 2010

Posted by Peter Jones on Mar 19, 2010

Easter

The Easter holidays are upon us and it’s nice to be slightly warmer on my rambles. There will be an Easter Egg hunt in the park area during the morning of the 6th April, registration will be at the farmers market on the day so get your bonnet on and join in!

I have spoken to our new Countryside Access Warden who is walking the public rights of way reporting faults and replacing directional arrows and path identification plates. He is happy to look at faults reported by Capel residents, you can report by calling 0845 3450210 or by emailing CAS.volunteer@kent.gov.uk. If becoming a Countryside Access Warden sounds like a volunteer opportunity for you there are vacancies available, the same contact details apply.

Waste collector vans

A number of flat backed vans have been seen cruising the village looking for scrap metals and other items. If you allow contractors to take your items without ensuring they have the correct waste carriers licence and they are subsequently found to be carrying or fly tipping your waste YOU are likely to be held responsible and face fines for environmental crimes. (this HAS happened locally).

If it is possible and safe to do so please take the vehicle registration, time and any descriptions and I will forward it to Kent trading standards for verification.

Litter

The absence of the white blanket has highlighted areas of the village that could do with a clear up. I am talking to Dover and Shepway councils to highlight certain areas and recognise the hard work of our local litter pickers but if there is an area you would like seen improved in some way please let me know and I will follow it up with the Clean Kent agency and maybe some volunteers.

Crime

Unfortunately some Capel residents are still losing various ornamental garden items. It would be a good idea to mark the bases of figures and pots with your post code and house number so items can be identified as stolen and returned to you if recovered. You would be surprised by the amount of equipment recovered by Kent Police but not claimed and items suspected to be stolen but not marked making it difficult to prove and make an arrest.

Neighbourhood Watch

Police are looking for a small orange V registered car and a red R registered Ford in connection with activities in rural areas during the day. Please contact Kent Police directly if you have suspicions about cars matching these descriptions. If you register with NHW they will keep you informed of trends and crimes happening in your area quickly and in a format that suits you. Contact 01304 218152

Important message from Trading Standards Kent

Posted by Peter Jones on Dec 10, 2009

Residents in the Folkestone area are advised to be cautious of a man seen cold-calling at homes, offering to sell a security alarm, which fits to the back of an exterior door. The man reported has been quite verbally forceful in his approach, and has asked to be allowed entry to homes to fit the alarm. A description of the man is :

Around 45 years old, thick set, 5 feet 7 to 8, wearing black, black canvas shoulder bag, sandy hair colour, local accent.

You should not allow someone to enter your home without first checking their identity is correct, if necessary by telephoning their employer. Any legitimate business should be happy for you to do this, their staff will carry proper identification, and will allow you ask them to return at a later date. Always use a door chain when answering to an unknown caller, and do not accept any goods or services that you do not require. Note that any goods or services priced at £35 or higher require a cancellation notice to be issued allowing you seven days within which to change your mind and cancel the contract.

If you or someone you know receives a visit from a trader in this manner, please report it to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506, and if concerned about your security, please also inform Kent Police on 01622 690690.
